Hidden Windows 7 secrets that you aren’t aware of

Windows 7 is one of the most popular operating systems to be released. It was made available to consumers in late 2009. It remained the flagship product of Microsoft up till the 2012 release of Windows 8. Windows 7 remains a fan favorite to date, with users sticking to the veteran operating system even when we’re at the brink of the Windows 11 release this year. Windows 7 offered a fresh look with modern and dynamic features while retaining ties to the retro Vista and XP versions. The perfect harmony that was achieved between the past and the future led to an ideal system for the present. Windows 7 presented abundant new features that users were quick to adopt. Our website ValidEdge features extensive articles, blogs and tutorials for various operating systems such as Android, Windows, iOS, Linux, and much more. Some of these features of Windows 7 weren’t as apparent as the rest of the features that were made available on Windows 7. Let’s take a look at some of these hidden features of Windows 7.

Virtual Wi-Fi

Have you had a faulty router or maybe none at all? Windows 7 has you covered with their virtual Wi-Fi feature! Just the ethernet cable for a single device. With a few accessible commands in the command prompt and linking the LAN to the virtual network, you’re all set with your virtual Wi-Fi! You can change the name, password, and more through your command shell. This convenient feature might feel a little complex to learn at first, but it is worth the trouble. This is an essential hidden feature that can save you both time and money!

Power efficiency report

Windows 7 allows you to know the power consumption and efficiency of the device you’re using! This is a novel feature that helps you to understand the functionality of the hardware you’re using. Running a one-line command in the command line leads to the system tracing energy consumption for 60 seconds. An analysis of the data follows this. Then it is printed neatly into an HTML file.  The report gives information related to the battery health, CPU, and all the hardware using energy. It then provides a list of problems or errors that the user can rectify. This is an important feature and helps you know the state of your hardware.

God mode

Yes, you read that right. There’s a God mode in Windows 7! Don’t worry; it’s not a cracked or modded version of Windows. It gives you open access to all windows settings options inside of one folder. How to get into God mode? It’s easy. Create a new folder. Rename it using the F2 or right-click option to GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}. You will end up with a control panel-like icon with a blank for its name. Click on it and access the unlimited power! The folder has over 200 items containing every configurable option for your device. This feature comes in handy and allows you to explore the settings of your device.

Reliability monitor

Has your system not been reliable enough lately? Windows 7 has just the perfect tool to find the impediment. Search ‘Reliability monitor’ or navigate through the control panel’s system and security settings to get to the reliability monitor. This graph shows the reliability on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the most reliable and one being the least. It also shows the events leading to a fall in reliability. This report can be saved as an XML file and shared.

Problem step recorder

Windows has a nifty feature called problem step recorder if you want to make a tutorial or help remotely. It can be easily accessed by searching for ‘psr.’ Click on the Start Record button, and the feature will record all your movements as a series of automatic screenshots and captions. On ending the recording, these are saved in an HTML file ready to be exported. This feature helps make or send a tutorial or help someone remotely when remote access doesn’t work. This new feature in Windows 7 has proven to be one of the best innovations yet. The tutorials are featured online, in textbooks, and have myriad applications. The export file format is edit-friendly. This is, in my opinion, the best-hidden feature.

Wipe free disk space

Deleting a file in windows leads to the space taken up by the space not being freed immediately. It is labeled as available for use, but the data is still stored until it’s overwritten. You may want to wipe such deleted files and free up more space. Windows 7 allows you to do that with a trivial command. This is much less used than the other features, albeit being useful in a lot of cases.

Rename multiple files

Windows lets you rename files in a batch. If you have number of files that you want to be named in consecutive serial numbers, this is what you’ve been looking for. Select all the desired files—Right-click on the first file and select rename, or press F2. Rename the first file with a number, and the rest will follow. If no number is given, numbers from one automatically follow. Windows 7 has released lots of new features and easter eggs.  Most of these features are ease of access and quality of life changes. Technology is ever-growing and is adapting as fast as human needs; some might even say it’s faster. Some features are pretty ahead of their time and are often overlooked. Microsoft has secured its place as the best of the best in this cut-throat technological race of operating systems, hardware, software, and all of their combined use as a machine interacting with humans. Windows 8 and 10 have shown further improvements and proven the consistency of Microsoft Windows and their resolve to better their product. Looking back at these nifty features released with Windows 7 more than 12 years ago leaves us in anticipation of the upcoming Windows 11 release, hoping that it lives up to its ancestors.
